Badgers Girls' Soccer Team Faces Nail-Biting State Qualifier in Overtime Battle

In a thrilling state qualifier match, the Badgers, who secured the District 3A 1-2 runner-up position, faced off against the Fruitland Grizzlies at Walker Field. The game unfolded into an intense battle that ultimately led to a penalty shootout.

"Fruitland scored in the first ten minutes, but then the girls held them," recounted Bonners Ferry head coach Emily Winebark. "We scored at the end of the first half off a beautiful corner kick by Brenly Hymas, which was chest trapped and scored by Markynn Pluid."

Winebark also highlighted the exceptional defensive performance of her team, with Lena Teele and Brooke Petesch expertly marking Fruitland's strongest players and rendering them ineffective. Nevaeh Therrien also delivered an outstanding defensive game on the wing.

Following two 10-minute double overtimes, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1, necessitating a dramatic penalty shootout.

"Unfortunately, by overtime, the girls got tired and resorted to playing mostly defensively, but they played a physical and extremely tough game of soccer for 100 minutes, with many of them not taking any substitutions," Winebark explained.

In the penalty shootout, Fruitland managed to secure three goals, while the Badgers found the net once through Brenly Hymas. Markynn Pluid, Alexys Mierke, Lena Teele, and Maddie Hart also stepped up to take penalty kicks.

"Goalkeeper Alexis Brown demonstrated exceptional skills in the goal, making two crucial dives and tipping two shots from Fruitland, almost saving them," Winebark added, noting that Brown made two saves during the shootout.

With this match, Fruitland emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline after penalties, while Bonners Ferry finished the season with a record of 9-8, 6-4.

Fruitland (14-3-2) secured a spot at the state tournament, beginning on Thursday at Vallivue High. The Badgers' season was marked by remarkable highlights, including a third-place finish in the league and a comeback victory over Timberlake (1-0) in the districts, following an earlier 7-2 loss to the Tigers.
